Therapeutic Laser Biological Effects

Rapid Cell Growth – Laser light accelerates cellular reproduction and growth.

Faster Wound Healing – Laser light stimulates fibroblast development and accelerates collagen synthesis in damaged tissue.

Increased Metabolic Activity – Higher outputs of specific enzymes, greater oxygen and food particle loads for blood cells and thus greater production of the basic food source for cells, Adenosine Tri-Phosphate (ATP).

Reduced Fibrous Tissue Formation – Laser light reduces the formation of scar tissue following tissue damage from: cuts, scratches, burns or post surgery.

Anti-Inflammatory Action – Laser light reduces swelling caused by bruising or inflammation of joints to give enhanced joint mobility.

Increased Vascular Activity – Laser light induces temporary vasodilation increasing blood flow to damaged areas.

Stimulated Nerve Function – Slow recovery of nerve function in damaged tissue can result in “dead” limbs or numb areas. Laser light speeds the process of nerve cell reconnection to bring the numb areas back to life.

Arthritis Treatments

Arthritis is a group of conditions involving damage to the joints of the body. It is characterized by painful, swollen and stiff joints. Arthritis is one of the leading causes of disability in people over the age of 55, greatly impacting the level of function and quality of life of multitudes of people.

Primary forms of arthritis include:
Osteoarthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis
Psoriatic arthritis
Gout
Osteoporosis
Ankylosing Spondylitis

Arthritis may affect one joint or many joints. Some of the more common joints affected are knees, hands, hips, neck and lower back.

Arthritis Treatment with Cold Laser

Laser Therapy is very effective in decreasing arthritis symptoms by regenerating new cartilage, reducing inflammation and swelling around the joints, and providing significant pain relief.

At the Theralase Laser and Rehabilitation Centre we integrate Laser Therapy with other rehabilitation services to address the pain and discomfort associated with various arthritic conditions.

Sports Injuries

What are Sports Injuries?

Sports injuries are generally caused by an acute trauma, such as a fall or hard contact with another athlete, or overuse of the body during activity.

shoulder pain

65% of all sports injuries are classified as sprains or strains.

Sprains are injuries to a ligament (tissue that connects bones). They usually occur from a sudden fall, twist or a blow that forces the joint out of its normal position causing the ligament to be overstretched or torn. Symptoms include pain, joint tenderness, swelling, warmth, and difficulty moving the injured joint.

A strain is an injury to a muscle or tendon (tissue that connects muscle to bone). It can be caused by overstretching a muscle or tendon, improper lifting, or repetitive movement of muscles or tendons. Symptoms of strain include muscle stiffness or soreness and may also include swelling, cramping and inflammation.

Some common examples of sports injuries include:

  • Tennis elbow
  • Golfers Elbow
  • Shin Splints
  • Shoulder Injuries
  • Stress Fractures
  • Achilles tendonitis
  • Runners Knee

The trauma of sports injuries causes damage to the cells that make up the soft tissues. These damaged cells release chemicals that initiate a natural inflammatory response in the body. The result is redness, swelling, warmth and pain in the injured area. Persistent or recurrent inflammation can pre-dispose the athlete to early onset of arthritic or degenerative changes in their joints.

Laser Therapy reduces both the short term inflammation and long term risk of arthritis commonly associated with sports injuries.

The benefits of laser therapy include:

  • Decreased inflammation
  • Increased blood flow to the injured site
  • Decreased pain
  • Minimized formation of scar tissue
  • Growth of new, healthy tissues
  • Applied immediately after injury
  • Can be used over metal plates, rods or pins
  • Decreased need for pharmaceuticals, such as painkillers and anti inflammatories
  • Speeds up recovery time

Theralase Laser Rehabilitation Centre offers effective treatment programs for sports injuries, getting you back to your activities quickly. Laser therapy, massage, exercise and education are uniquely integrated to facilitate healing and prevent re-injury.

Treat repetitive back pain and strains with cold laser

Treating Repetitive Strains with Cold Laser

What are Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI)?

Repetitive Strain injuries are a family of conditions that result in persistent or recurring pain from overuse of muscles and tendons. For example, tendons and muscles in the wrist may be injured by excessive keying on a computer or an elbow could become injured by repeated use in sports (eg tennis, golf). The pain usually is felt in the hands, wrists, arms, shoulders, elbows or neck.

Examples of Common RSIs:

  • Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
  • Tenosynovitis
  • DeQuervains Syndrome
  • Golfers Elbow
  • Tennis Elbow
  • Tendonitis
  • Thoracic Outlet Syndrome
  • Blackberry Thumb
  • Gamers Thumb

What are the Symptoms?

  • Pain in the upper back, neck, shoulder, wrists, hands, elbows or arms
  • Aching and pain increased at night/bed
  • Tingling, numbness, loss of Sensation
  • Weakness in arms and hands
  • Swelling around wrist or hands

At Theralase Laser and Rehabilitation Center we offer effective treatment programs that integrate laser therapy, rehabilitative services and preventative education.
